A simulated attack at Václav Havel Airport demonstrated a 97% faster response thanks to JALUD’s SED.

Quick Facts:

  • Location: Václav Havel Airport Prague

  • Scenario: Active shooter

  • Findings: Response time reduced from 175 seconds to 5 seconds

  • Technology: Sound Event Detector (SED) by JALUD

  • Partners: Police of the Czech Republic, Axis Communications, VSB – Technical University of Ostrava

Context: Seconds That Decide Lives

In critical situations, every second matters. Yet most incidents are reported with delay — people react more slowly under pressure, and sometimes not at all.

A 2025 expert study tested what happens when intelligent acoustic detectors from JALUD are added to the equation.

What We Tested

As part of the STČ-14/IZS AMOK exercise at Prague Airport, a series of attack scenarios were simulated:

  • verbal aggression,
  • forced entry into the facility,

  • gunfire and hostage-taking.

In all scenarios, the JALUD SED system was deployed — ready to detect screams, gunshots, or any other critical sound event.

Results That Cannot Be Ignored

Scenario Traditional Response Response via SED Difference
Scenario 2 – Scream 30 s 5 s 25 s
Scenario 3 – Gunshot 6 min 50 s 5 s 6 min 45 s
Scenario 4 – Gunshot 1 min 27 s 5 s 1 min 22 s

The SED system repeatedly provided the first alert of the incident — automatically and without reliance on human reaction.

The results were statistically significant (p < 0.01) and demonstrated:

      • consistent performance without delay,

      • zero error rate during the experiment,

      • a substantial reduction in the time required for security forces to intervene.

Why It Matters

With most traditional methods (emergency calls, panic buttons, witnesses), there is a risk of human failure — delays, panic, or the bystander effect. JALUD’s automated acoustic detectors eliminate these variables.

Early information = faster intervention = lives saved.

Technology Background

  • SED – Sound Event Detector (JALUD Embedded s.r.o.)

  • Detection of gunshots, screams, and glass breaking with >95% accuracy

  • Integration with Axis cameras (P1387)

  • Deployment on mobile tripods with connection to the airport’s central security system

Limitations and Outlook

The only scenario in which the SED did not succeed involved an incident without any acoustic signature — highlighting the need for a multi-sensor approach (e.g., combining audio and video detection).

The study also points to the need for further calibration in high-noise environments and recommends the use of more advanced AI models (e.g., transformer-based architectures) to enhance performance.

Conclusion

This simulation confirmed that JALUD’s SED can fundamentally change the way security forces respond to threats.

Whether in schools, airports, railway stations, or shopping centers — anywhere response time matters, this technology has a clear role to play.

A few seconds may not seem like much. In a crisis, they can define the outcome.
